Saint-Esprit was built between 1928 and 1935 by architect Paul Tournon, following a design inspired by the Hagia Sophia in Istanbul. The church was made of reinforced concrete and faced with red bricks from Burgundy.Tournon explained that the massive dome, lightened by a row of openings at its base and resting on a square nave, was meant to symbolize the union of the divine and the earthly. The dome is 22 meters (72 feet) in diameter, rising to a height of 33 meters (108 feet). At the time, using reinforced concrete for both the supporting structure and the dome was quite a technical achievement.
